A letter to an Urdu-speaking friend of yours describing the annual sports of your College.

annual sports

My dear Ashadul,

I received your letter yesterday. You will be glad to know that I got two prizes in the annual sports of our school that was held on Saturday last. I cannot resist the temptation of giving you an account of it.

The sports began at 2 p.m. There were many interesting events. A first the races were held. The orange race was the funniest of all. In the sack race, some boys fell down and rolled on the ground to the great amusement of the spectators. The most thrilling was the tug-of-war between the teachers and students. The struggle continued for over ten minutes amidst loud cheers. The students had every chance of winning if they only tried seriously to get the better of their teachers in a physical contest. The students were defeated, but there was joy in this defeat.

I took part in three events and got two prizes-one in the long jump and the other in the hurdle race. I came first in both these events.

The function was presided over by the Principal, Jalpaiguri Engineering College. He delivered a short speech dealing with the importance of sports in student life. Then he gave the prizes to the successful competitors. The function came to an end at 5 pm. We had really a jolly afternoon that day. More when we meet. With love and best wishes.

Yours ever.

Damashu Roy
