My dear Arjun,

You may realise the reasonable cause of my long silence. But I am sure that you will be happy if you know why I could not reply to your sweet notes in time,

I think you must have read in the newspapers that a tremendous flood gripped the districts of Midnapore, Howrah and Burdwan recently. The most affected district was Midnapore. After the widespread havoc, I went to an area in Midnapore with a few of my friends to join the relief work, We saw there nothing but flood-water on all sides. Hundreds of houses went underwater. The crops were seen floating on the water and cattle perished. Most of the mud-built houses collapsed. The misery of those, who survived knew no bounds. They had nothing to drink or eat.

So many children were crying bitterly. We supplied dry food to them and distributed tripods and medicines among the flood victims. We tried our best to help the suffering people but our supply was insufficient. The scene we saw there, beggars description. There were also government and non-government relief parties, that fought against the tremendous flood. I was tired of day-night relief work for a week. Now I am well. No more today. More when we meet.

Yours sincerely,

Debashis Roy
