 FAIRS AND FESTIVALS OF W.B.

A popular proverb says that there are thirteen festivals in twelve months. They are woven fine in our social life. Here fairs and festivals are very frequent. They exhibit the joyous and cheerful mood of people. They are classified under three heads religious, social and cultural.

Among the religious festivals, the Durga Puja comes to our mind first. The Hindus worship Shiba and Kali. Saraswati Puja is no less important. There are other festivals like Charak, Dipabali, Doljatra, Basanti Puja and Biswakarma Puja. Bengalees gorgeously observe ' Poila Baisakh' and Pous Parban. Muslims celebrate Moharam. Ramjan and Id. Christians observe Christmas and Easter. Now Book Fairs have become a festival, too. Handloom Expo and other fairs are being held every year in Kolkata and other towns.

Fairs and festivals have social and cultural utility. Social festivals mould a friendly atmosphere. Caste, religion, blind faith and affluence cannot mar the festival mood. They help grow and preserve the spirit of oneness. They remove monotony and bring variety. Life will be dull without them. Above all, fairs and festivals act as the spirit of National Integration.
