The Durga Puja is the greatest festival of Bengal. It is held in autumn. Goddess Durga and her children are worshipped for three or four days. Devi Durga is the symbol of strength and power. The puja is performed with great pomp ( ধুমধাম ). The images are placed in the decorated pandals. A grand lighting is done on this occasion.
Thousands of men, women and children come out in the streets in their new dresses to see the goddess. On the fourth day the image is immersed in the rivers. All feel lost and sad. During this festival the schools, colleges, offices and factories remain closed. Many people go out and many come into Bengal in this long holidays. The people forget their sorrows for these four days. It is really a grand occasion of family re-union, new dresses, feast and enjoyment.

Festivals tone up a sagging mind. They are a source of entertainment and pleasure. So I am fond of festivals. Of all festivals, the Durga puja is the grandest of all. It is held in autumn. Durga is the goddess of power. She and her children are worshipped for three days. Puja pandals are tastefully decorated and illuminated. Men, women and children like me dressed in their best go to see the images and pandals. On the fourth and final day, the images are immersed in ponds and rivers. I like Durga puja the best for this festival rings in a happy occasion of family reunion. It conjures up an image of complete happiness.
